  • A song about Love and vengeance – The visit

    贵妇1 贵妇2

    Date/Time: 5 July - 8 July

    About the program:

"A supremely well-rounded play that takes the grotesque seriously and its inherent brutality lightly. The whole evening is interwoven with songs by the pop diva (Lady Gaga), which, in new arrangements by Thies Mynther, have an astonishingly brittle soulfulness that suit the old lady surprisingly well. This also has to do with the fact that Kraft emphasises the enduring theme of betrayal in love, and unlike other directors before him, avoids weighing down this ballad about the (financial) corruptibility of humans with political overtones. Nonetheless, the abyss into which society has fallen is of course glaringly obvious."

    ----Berliner Morgenpost, Katrin Pauly
    19.04.2014
"I want your love / And I want your revenge / You and me could write a bad romance" – Up until now, you never would have imagined that the songs by Lady Gaga go so well with Friedrich Dürrenmatt. But the Deutsches Theater Berlin, which this season has a mission to seek out the pop aspects of classic plays (recently, for example, in Stefan Pucher’s version of Elektra by Sophocles), emphasises the unexpected. Brilliantly, dazzlingly: voilà, The Visit of Lady Güllen."
    ----nachtkritik.de, Christian Rakow
    18.04.2014
    About Deutsches Theater Berlin:

The Deutsches Theater has been making history ever since receiving that name in 1883.  Otto Brahm turned it into a hotbed of Naturalist theatre, championing works by Gerhart Hauptmann, August Strindberg und Arthur Schnitzler. Once the DT came under the direction of the legendary Max Reinhardt in 1905, it quickly earned the reputation of being Germany's top stage. After Reinhardt fled Nazi Germany in 1933, his former assistant Heinz Hilpert brought the DT through the Nazi period with a classical-humanist repertoire.
Each year the Deutsches Theater takes its productions on tour and performs at festivals in places like New York, South America, Japan, and across Europe. A series of television broadcasts of DT productions and frequent invitations to Berlin’s prestigious Theatertreffen festival testify to the theatre’s continuing success. In an annual poll conducted by influential German theatre magazine Theater heute, critics voted the DT “Theatre of the Year” in 2005 and 2008.

The stage setting by Stefan Brandt Meyers did a really good job that the actors and actresses could easily change the scene themselves.
And of course the actors were the best, each of them played more than one character, but they changed so smoothly and flawlessly.”

  • Wonder boys of the Jazz World - Jacaranda Ensemble

    Schedule: Summer July - August

    About the Jacaranda Ensemble:

Five musicians, principals of the Brandenburg Symphony, have put together an unusual ensemble as a result of a desire to experiment with new sounds.
The instrumentation of this ensemble clearly demonstrates this idea: Alpenhorn, didgeridoo, saxophone and percussion, instuments whose origins often are thousands of miles apart, which are woven through a mixture of composed and improvised music into a musical tapestry.
Through its music, the Jacaranda Ensemble builds a bridge between the cultures of the world. The positive response of the public as well as international respect has confirmed the unusual concept of the Jacaranda Ensemble. Concert tours within Germany and abroad, as well as a positive reaction from the media are the visible results of this artistic endeavor.
Alpenhorn —— Among all of their instruments, the most noticeable instrument would be the 4 – meter – long alpenhorn, which is also the longest musical instrument in the world and the one that carries sound to the longest distance. Its very own special sound easily reminds people of the magnificent Alps. That and saxophone, bassoon, French horn, drums, along with a dozen instruments all seemed magical in the hands of the five.
The music the Jacaranda Ensemble presents is a force to be reckoned with against classical music - it’s a new combo of both classical and modern music, a merge of jazz and world music. With its deep root in Classical music and the touch of folk music, the Jacaranda Ensemble now has formed their recognizable style and has become a performing style the Brandenburg Orchestra takes pride in. Between intervals of the performances, the Jacaranda Ensemble will take the stage and surprise the audience with their brilliant improvisation and seamless team cooperation. And that’s not all: all pieces played are all original works or rearrangements of the ensemble.
The ensemble has won countless awards and left footprints all over the world since its establishment and was once awarded with the most popular music group prize in Germany. Wherever they go the rave comments follow. The ensemble’s concert  has also been featured in the renowned Los Angeles International Music Festival.

Apart from the conventional repertoire, the ensemble has also added Chinese folk music elements into their pieces. Their rich touring experience in China has inspired them with lots of brilliant pieces.

The Staatstheater Nürnberg again presents the Hitchcock classical work and has gained high praise:
