Anna Karenina the Musical

Since its first night, the musical Anna Karenina has never failed to sell out. The production has earned such awards as “The hit of the season” and “Theatre-goer’s Star” in the category “The best musical show”. It has been awarded a special prize by the ticket selling company Ticketland.ru as the most popular show of the year.

The musical Anna Karenina has been seen by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic patrons. The production created by a team of Russian actors, who relied on the cutting-edge production technologies, also sparks great international interest. Anna Karenina  has become the first Russian musical to be produced under a license abroad, in South Korea. In 2018 a movie version of the musical was created. That was an extraordinary event in national musical history: an original Russian theatre production was screened for the first time.

    ***
Anna Karenina’s libretto was penned by Yuliy Kim, a famous Russian poet and playwright who has written dozens of popular songs. The music was composed by Roman Ignatyev for whom Anna Karenina is his third collaboration with the Moscow Operetta Theatre. Director Alina Chevik has worked successfully in the genres of musical and operetta for many years. The choreographer of the musical is Irina Korneeva, a ballet master with a wide dancing range. Anna Karenina’s musical director is Konstantin Khvatynets, a guest conductor at Moscow leading musical theatres and chief conductor of the Moscow Operetta Theatre. Set and lighting design were provided by Saint Petersburg theatre designers Vyacheslav Okunev and Gleb Filshtinsky known for their collaboration with worldwide famous La Scala and Metropolitan Opera as well as the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi Theatres. Makeup and hairstyles were created by makeup and hair artist Andrey Drykin who has worked with top beauty magazines and fashion shows worldwide.

The story takes place in the late 19th century Russia. Count Alexey Vronsky, a dashing aristocrat, meets Anna Karenina, the young and charming wife of an influential government official. After a brief meeting, the two become infatuated with each other. For both, this relationship turns out to be the first true love — so strong, in fact, that desperate Anna chooses to break the upper class conventions and elope with Vronsky leaving her husband and son in St. Petersburg. But the love fairytale ends shortly, as fate puts their feelings to the test.

The musical captures the subtle psychology and emotional depth of the great novel by Leo Tolstoy. The story of a dramatic relationship between a married woman and a young military man found an instant response in the hearts of the writer’s contemporary readership, but today Anna Karenina remains just as meaningful providing a truly timeless portrait of society.

Nine moving screens, a multi-ton metal construction and more than 300 of lighting units combine onstage to produce a true set of the future with large-as-life spectator immersion. A sophisticated computer system navigates a set of moving video screens creating an impressive “multimedia puzzle” in a venue filled with light and music. It draws audiences inside the musical’s action turning spectators into invisible presences traveling from a 19th century opera house to a skating rink, or a luxurious palace, or a summertime countryside. Certainly, the show features the famous train scene, as an incredibly spectacular and dramatic climax sweeps over the audience before the finale.

  • HOLLAND BAROQUE & WU WEI

Holland Baroque likes to share the stage with playful, inspiring musicians. Composer and improviser Wu Wei is such a musician. Wu Wei can do everything with the sheng, the Chinese mouth organ that represents three thousand years of Chinese music culture and that is a miracle of harmony, melody and rhythmic possibilities.

Why does a baroque orchestra meet a sheng player?

The actual encounter of orchestra and musical guest always takes place in the field of a shared sound world. Holland Baroque and Wu Wei connect the beautiful sheng sound with baroque music and hear that old traditions and exotic instruments can produce new stories.

The result is a concert of new and old compositions that tells one thing in particular: Music is alive and continues to be so when creative spirits leap upon music that still has a huge power of expressiveness today. Whether that is music from Western or Eastern cultures, composed or improvised music is no longer relevant.

"Sheng means hope and hope is life," says Wu Wei. He is a modern musician who carries out an ancient tradition. It’s no coincidence that on Wu Wei’s sheng case a sticker is stuck with his motto: "Gutes bleibt, neues kommt”. A Motto that Holland Baroque can relate to very wel. Cherish what needs to be preserved and be open to new sounds. Because Holland Baroque thinks old music does not exist. The music is only finished when you play it.

'Giving old notes new life, that is the holy grail.' T. Steenbrink, Holland Baroque

  • A song about Love and vengeance – The visit

    Date/Time: 5 July - 8 July

    About the program:

"A supremely well-rounded play that takes the grotesque seriously and its inherent brutality lightly. The whole evening is interwoven with songs by the pop diva (Lady Gaga), which, in new arrangements by Thies Mynther, have an astonishingly brittle soulfulness that suit the old lady surprisingly well. This also has to do with the fact that Kraft emphasises the enduring theme of betrayal in love, and unlike other directors before him, avoids weighing down this ballad about the (financial) corruptibility of humans with political overtones. Nonetheless, the abyss into which society has fallen is of course glaringly obvious."

    ----Berliner Morgenpost, Katrin Pauly
    19.04.2014
"I want your love / And I want your revenge / You and me could write a bad romance" – Up until now, you never would have imagined that the songs by Lady Gaga go so well with Friedrich Dürrenmatt. But the Deutsches Theater Berlin, which this season has a mission to seek out the pop aspects of classic plays (recently, for example, in Stefan Pucher’s version of Elektra by Sophocles), emphasises the unexpected. Brilliantly, dazzlingly: voilà, The Visit of Lady Güllen."

    About Deutsches Theater Berlin:

The Deutsches Theater has been making history ever since receiving that name in 1883.  Otto Brahm turned it into a hotbed of Naturalist theatre, championing works by Gerhart Hauptmann, August Strindberg und Arthur Schnitzler. Once the DT came under the direction of the legendary Max Reinhardt in 1905, it quickly earned the reputation of being Germany's top stage. After Reinhardt fled Nazi Germany in 1933, his former assistant Heinz Hilpert brought the DT through the Nazi period with a classical-humanist repertoire.
Each year the Deutsches Theater takes its productions on tour and performs at festivals in places like New York, South America, Japan, and across Europe. A series of television broadcasts of DT productions and frequent invitations to Berlin’s prestigious Theatertreffen festival testify to the theatre’s continuing success. In an annual poll conducted by influential German theatre magazine Theater heute, critics voted the DT “Theatre of the Year” in 2005 and 2008.

    Date: 28th, June, 2017 - 1st, July, 2017

The Staatstheater Nürnberg again presents the Hitchcock classical work and has gained high praise:

“Within such a comedy, the actors and actresses were always in tense, they changed clothes, even the characters so fast that you must be shocked. Though there were differences between the drama and the movie, but the crazy actions and audio-visual feast made you enjoy and won’t regret to see.
The stage setting by Stefan Brandt Meyers did a really good job that the actors and actresses could easily change the scene themselves.
And of course the actors were the best, each of them played more than one character, but they changed so smoothly and flawlessly.”
-- Friedrich J. Bröder published on “The Baravian”

    ***

    ----nachtkritik.de, Christian Rakow
    18.04.2014
